Illustrated talk on the creation of the Royal Academy of Arts, held in the iconic Life Drawing Room of the Royal Academy Schools, followed by a tour of the new galleries.

2019 marks the 250th anniversary of the foundation of the Royal Academy of Arts. The RA has always been at the centre of UK visual arts and at present it is particularly vibrant and vigorous. John Entwistle will tell us how the Royal Academy of Arts came into being and will highlight some of the remarkable people and events that moulded its creation. The illustrated talk will be held in the historic Life Drawing Room where generations of artists have drawn from the model or from the classical casts that are still to be seen in the corridor recently redesigned by David Chipperfield RA connecting the Schools to the main building. We will then be able to wander through the new galleries in the Burlington Gardens development, guided by John, to look at works which have a significance in the history of the Royal Academy, and for those who wish, to join up for lunch in one of the RA’s cafes.

John Entwistle is well placed to tell this story. In his professional life he has been a distinguished lawyer, judge and president of the British Chambers of Commerce. However, John has also held a lifelong passion for the visual arts. He is an enthusiastic watercolourist and keen-eyed collector of contemporary art. He became a Trustee of the RA Development Trust and Chairman of the Patrons of the Royal Academy Schools in 2006. He was also Chair of the Romney Society based in Kendal in the Lake District from 2012 to 2016. He is currently an Emeritus Trustee of the Royal Academy Development Trust, and we are fortunate that he has secured this timely opportunity for us to hear this story in the best place for it to be told.

Please make your way through the Royal Academy via the main entrance on Piccadilly to the Schools, or enter the Schools at the new Burlington Gardens entrance to meet in the Life Drawing Room at 11am.
