Date : 15/01/2020 | Time : 6:30 pm - 10:30 pm | Location : Browns Covent Garden

The Harkness Birthday Dinner 2020 will once again be held at Browns Bar and Brasserie, Covent Garden. Browns is located at 82-84 St Martin’s Lane, WC2N 4AG, a short walk north from Trafalgar Square and English National Opera. Nearest tube: Leicester Square. Browns is the old Westminster County Court, and our dinner will once again be held in their splendid Chambers.  Browns have looked after us all very well in the past.

Our guest speaker is Stanley Johnson (HF1963).  Stanley worked in the World Bank in Washington, DC at the end of the ‘sixties and subsequently pursued a ‘European’ career as an MEP and official of the European Commission.  He has won numerous awards for his environmental work, including the Greenpeace award for Outstanding Services to the Environment, the RSPB Medal, and the WWF Leader of the Living Planet Award. He was written a dozen  non-fiction books on environmental and demographic topics, two volumes of memoir, and ten novels, the most recent of which, ‘Kompromat’,  is  a satirical political thriller about, inter alia, Russian interference in the recent EC referendum.

For those Harkness Fellows who may possess a television set, it may be worth pointing out that his most recent career moves include appearing on  so-called Reality TV, including I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here,  the Real Marigold Hotel and Celebrity Hunted.  He is, incidentally,  the father of Boris Johnson and will speak on the topic of ‘Life’s Little Surprises’!

We invite Fellows and their guests to book for what should prove a most enjoyable occasion, as we toast Edward Harkness and listen to Stanley Johnson. The cost is £70 per head for members and guests. It includes a three-course meal with ample amounts of wine or soft drinks, and prosecco before dinner.

The deadline for booking tickets is Wednesday 8th January. If you find that you need to cancel your tickets for any reason, refunds will not be offered for cancellations made after Friday 10th January.

Please put any dietary requirements in the ‘Access’ box on the form, or email them to harkness@acu.ac.uk.

If you have any problems, please contact Helen on 0207 380 6704 or harkness@acu.ac.uk
